Made while working on a geological field program in the mid-1990s. Yemen is the most fascinating country I have visited during my days of international travel. The history, archaeology, and architecture are incredible, but the people are most memorable to me. Especially in the small villages, they will welcome you into their house, serve tea, and make you feel like an honored guest. This image was made in a larger village but in a remote area. The multi-storied buildings are very common and some of the oldest of their kind in the world. I captured this as clouds were quickly passing overhead and managed to find the few seconds when the sun illuminated the buildings but left the cliff in the background and the foreground in the cloud shadows.
